Job Description: 

Our client, an established and fast growing grower-packer-shipper-distributor of fresh conventional and organic produce, with over $200 million in annual revenues, is searching for an experienced Director of Food Safety to join their team in this newly created leadership role. This role is all about leading a highly successful company in food safety, as they grow their business and evolve their practices and team.

For the right candidate, there is potential to be a member of the Executive Leadership Team.

Responsibilities & Duties: 

The Director of Food Safety will direct and lead all aspects of the Food Safety & Regulatory Programs for the company, including:

  • Leading and further developing the company’s food safety and quality assurance team.
  • Keeping the company on the cutting edge of food safety technology and innovation.
  • Acting as the company’s expert on food safety; holding all team members, suppliers and customers accountable to the company’s high food safety standards.
  • Ensuring that the company complies with all Global Food Safety Initiatives (GFSI) and National Organic Program (NOP) standards.
  • Ensuring that all the company suppliers are in compliance with the new FSMA regulations, FDA expectations and Good Agricultural Practices.
  • Developing relationships and acting as the key authority to all of the company’s third party testing partners, including Safe Quality Food (SQF), British Retail Consortium (BRC), Primus Laboratories, Quality Assurance International (QAI), and all other testing partners.
  • Managing and improving the company’s environmental monitoring programs at the field and facility levels.
  • Developing, implementing and managing a comprehensive supply chain (field to truck) level food safety monitoring program to ensure that the company contracted growers and suppliers are meeting the company's food safety standards.
  • Monitoring and helping improve our suppliers Social Responsibility and Sustainability programs.
Education: 

While hands-on-experience is a priority, a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related field is required.  This individual will be certified in HACCP and Advanced HACCP, Internal Auditing, third party GFSI audit standards, Food Security and Defense.

Ideal Candidate: 

This is not a "management" role, but rather a "leadership" role. Our client wants the special person who has the proven ability to see the big picture and at translate that to a "real world" fresh produce food safety program. They have a solid team in place now, and want to hire a leader who will help drive initiatives and grow their team's ability to move from good to great.

The ideal candidate will meet and/or exceed all the required qualifications, and be someone who will integrate well with our client's team, from production to the board room.

Qualifications: 

This professional will have in-depth and up-to-date knowledge of FSMA, third party GFSI auditing and understanding of food processing, microbiology, sanitation, HACCP, GMP, and GFSI Standards in general.  He/she will have a minimum of 5 years of experience managing food safety in a food production companies and/or food safety auditing experience.

Personal qualities will include strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills, proven interpersonal skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.  Bilingual, English/Spanish fluency would be a plus.
