Director of Operations

Job Description: 

The Director of Operations is responsible for the direct management and handling of all warehousing and distribution functions at Lakeside’s warehouse facilities in Canada and the US. This includes accountability for inbound and outbound freight, as well as adherence to legislative, safety, and organizational policies and procedures. The Director of Operations will accomplish effective warehouse and logistic oversight through strong leadership and decision-making skills. Additional duties will include the achievement of budget targets in the department and in the expense categories

Responsibilities & Duties: 

Key Business Functions, Responsibilities, and Accountabilities:
Warehouse & Pack house

  • Plans, implements and monitors the day-to-day operations for the warehousing function, including analyzing operating data and reports, determining manpower needs and monitoring adherence to standards to ensure business plan objectives are met or exceeded
  • Accountable for the functions that receive, handle, pack/repack, distribute, and storage of all product, and supplies that come in and out of warehouses.
  • Plan warehouse layout and space requirements in order to prevent loss or damage, and to achieve full warehouse optimization.
  • Take into account full implications of product turnover, size, weight, and other factors when allocating warehouse space.
  • Manage an annual budget or capital investment plan for warehousing functions across the organization.
  • Develop and/or enforce corporate policies regarding security and safety in order to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Work with Food and Healthy Safety to maintain appropriate and complete documentation regarding regulated products and/or hazardous materials.
  • Conduct periodic spot-checks of inventory levels, supplies, or equipment.
  • Assess the need for, and arrange the purchase of, moving equipment like trailers, forklifts, crash pads, dollies, and so on.
  • Identify discrepancies between inventory records and take action.
  • Ensure Quality Control and Inventory Manager reconcile reports to Procurement
  • Drives the warehouse management team, including involvement in the recruitment and selection process of new employees, assigning work, providing training and development, evaluating performance, and building a motivated, effective team to ensure that organizational goals for diversity, career development, productivity, performance management and employee involvement are met

Inventory

  • Collaborate with inventory manager and dry goods manager to minimize shortages and improve inventory holdings.
  • Ensures all policies and procedures necessary for adequate inventory control are in place and followed accordingly
  • Maintains oversight of all transactional data to ensure inventory integrity

Logistic/Shipping and receiving

  • Ensure processes to communicate all delays or variances in inbound/outbound freight to the appropriate parties are adhered to
  • Ensure all production orders are shipped to customers in a timely manner in adherence to delivery schedules.
  • Investigate causes of lost or damaged shipments and other matters; make adjustments where necessary.
  • Directs all shipping, receiving and parts picking activities to meet/exceed all service level requirements
  • Directs all activities related to inventory control and accuracy, on time shipments, condition of shipments and completeness of paper work.
  • Monitor inbound/outbound shipping and receiving.
  • Other duties, tasks, special projects as requested by the CEO

Relationship Management

  • Work closely with Global Supply and Sales to forecast and plan for fulfillment of customer orders
  • Work with Finance and HR to ensure all employees adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with Food Safety and Health Safety to support audits and compliance
Skills: 
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Superior communication and presentation skills (both oral and written)
  • Strong relationship building and management skills with vendors, suppliers, internal customers etc.
  • Strong agriculture knowledge
  • Ability to motivate and lead people

Educational & Working Experience Required:

  • Post-secondary Degree in related program
  • Ten to fifteen years’ experience in operations management role, including team building knowledge

Preferred:

  • 10-15 Years of warehouse management experience
  • Warehouse experience in the US and Canada
