Organically Grown Company is seeking a Director of Human Resources to be based out of its Portland location. OGC is the largest wholesale distributor of organic produce in the Pacific Northwest with Eugene, Portland, Oregon and Kent, Washington locations, wholly owned by employees and growers.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead in developing automated HR systems and streamline processes and procedures to improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the company.
  • Collaborate in establishing, and take the lead in implementing, an effective and proactive recruitment, hiring and new employee onboarding program to attract and retain a productive and talented workforce that fits the OGC culture.
  • Manage the development of job profiles; participate in developing human resource planning models to identify competency, knowledge and talent gaps within the company; implement the processes for creating individual development plans to address gaps; implement succession planning processes.
  • Lead the performance evaluation process to ensure timely and quality reviews, evaluation of performance, and goal setting and coaching for future performance.
  • Implement company training and development programs to prepare employees for more responsibilities and enhance employee knowledge and understanding of the business.
  • Develop progressive and proactive compensation and benefits programs to provide motivation, incentives and rewards for effective performance as individuals and as whole team. Provide programs and negotiate cost-effective insurance coverage for the short and long-term health and welfare of the employees.
  • Build working relationships with leadership team to understand department needs and communicate HR action plans. Be a key resource coaching the leadership team in employee relations and team development. Focuses on coaching for success, taking corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with Company policy.
  • Manage the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) and databases.  Assess and analyze HR related metrics that measure the health and success of the company.
  • Manage the HR budget and control expenses effectively; analyze and address variances.
  • Assess compensation and benefits programs against market on an annual basis; Work with CFO to determine average wage increase percentages and estimated benefits costs.
  • Administer Employee Stock Ownership Plan; Lead ESOP Advisory & Communication Committee.
  • Ensure Human Resource Department standards, policies and procedures are compliant with local, state, and federal laws reporting and record-keeping requirements.
  • Develop appropriate policies and processes for effective employee relations and performance management within the company; Act as a consultant to the OGC leadership team, advising them on how to best handle employee performance issues; Investigate employee complaints and facilitate resolution.
  • Maintain and enhance OGC’s shared ownership and organizational vitality culture, across all locations, through aligning structure, tools and processes, and driving continuous improvement.

Qualifications: 
  • Four year degree in related field plus six to eight years of related experience, or overall equivalent education and experience (SPHR certification).
  • An experienced leader in human resources management in a growth oriented company of 200+ employees in multiple locations, preferably in a manufacturing and/or distribution environment.
  • Knowledge of federal and state employment labor laws, Oregon state wage and hours laws, ERISA regulations, and HR trends in business and industry.  
  • Previous experience implementing and maintaining Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) and automating processes.  
  • Demonstrated experience in working as a business partner with the leadership team in hands-on coaching to provide expertise and advice on performance management and employee relations.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing development programs, including 360 assessment, personal development plans, succession plans, and high potential/high impact employee development programs preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in high impact recruiting, on-boarding, and retention and development of talent to ensure a skilled and competitive workforce.
  • Knowledge of organization development methodology, change management and effective team building.
  • Knowledge of and interest in agriculture and farming, preferably organics.
