Plant Manager

Job Description: 

The Plant Manager in Thornbury Ontario oversees and ensures smooth day-to-day operations of the apple sorting & packing plant. The incumbent also contributes to formulation of business strategies and directions, and is accountable for plant P&L.

  • Able to deal effectively with equipment suppliers and trades professionals
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of plant engineering and maintenance
  • Team building ability. Able to form, lead, unify, and develop a manufacturing team

Responsibilities & Duties: 

Senior Team

  • Actively participates in Senior Management Team in reviewing progress, developing strategies, establishing polices, building a robust infrastructure, maintaining a healthy business, and directing the course of the company

Administration and Accounting

  • Designs and implements procedures to ensure proper, timely, and accurate data entry for both financial and administrative purposes
  • Ensures biweekly payroll activities take place for pay calculation
  • Ensures month-end activities take place for closing
  • Communicates and enforces policies
  • Maintains safe and comfortable work environment of office employees
  • Accountable for administration budget and general expenses

Manufacturing

  • Manages sorting, packing & storage process
  • Provides focus, guidance, and opportunities for input on employee safety, employee comfort, team cohesiveness, product safety, product quality, and customer service
  • Ensures manufacturing process meet requirements of timeliness and cost effectiveness, and criteria stipulated by Ministry Of Labour, GMPs, Canada Gap, USDA GAP, and private label customers
  • Establishes and promotes a work safe environment
  • Plans and designs plant layout, equipment specifications, and infrastructure to meet growth requirements
  • Responsible for annual budgeting for all plant operations
  • Accountable for manufacturing P&L.

Production

  • Oversees, reviews, and assists troubleshoot daily production operations
  • Planning for daily & weekly production schedules
  • Scheduling employees to meet the daily/weekly production requirements
  • Determine a production schedule to meet customer orders understanding correct sizes by farm or bin/lot numbers
  • Oversees production floor data collection
  • Establishes and effects practices that emphasize production of safe and quality products
  • Provides direction in labor requirements
  • Provides mediation, support, guidance, and direction to Production department

Quality Control/Sanitation

  • Oversees and fosters proper construction of objective safety and quality parameters 
  • Oversees and fosters proper interpretation of sensory attributes of products
  • Assesses and stipulates scope of responsibilities and authority of Quality Control/Sanitation department
  • Provides mediation, support, guidance, and direction to Quality Control/Sanitation department.

Plant Equipment and Building Maintenance

  • Oversees proper upkeep of building to assure security and safety
  • Assesses and stipulates scope of responsibilities and authority of Maintenance department
  • Establishes and effects practices that emphasize timely preventative maintenance
  • Oversees the coordination of activities of trades professionals
  • Provides mediation, support, guidance, and direction for Maintenance department

Warehousing

  • Assesses and stipulates scope of responsibilities and authority of Warehouse department
  • Ensures weekly inventory activities take place, reviews physical counts, and approves final counts and adjustments in accounting systems for both finished goods and packaging materials
  • Working with trucking companies to ensure on time deliveries to customers
  • Provides mediation, support, guidance, and direction for Warehousing department

Safety

  • Ensures plant compliance of Ministry of Labor’s Employment Standards
  • Ensures Joint Committee meetings take place at regular intervals
  • Fosters discussion of and highlights safety issues and plant improvement at daily floor meetings and weekly general meetings

Staffing

  • Ensures adequate and effective staffing of various departments
  • Oversees recruitment, compensation, disciplinary actions, performance evaluation, and dismissal of employees
  • Fosters individual growth development and growth opportunity
  • Advances company’s goals of augmenting employee development, training, welfare, and morale

Costing

  • Oversees costing activities for manufactured products

Projects

  • Manages projects initiated at Thornbury facility
  • Other projects and duties assigned by President

Safety Quality Food

  • Leads and manages team in building a food quality and food safety culture in which all employees share the responsibility for food quality and food safety
  • Commits to and motivates employees to go beyond the rules to ensure food quality and protect food safety, assumes ownership and takes appropriate action without direction
  • Establishes and implements employees’ training needs to ensure they have required competencies to carry out functions affecting product legality (federal, provincial and municipal regulations), safety and quality.

Functional Backup

In the event the Plant Manager is absent, the President shall act as backup.

Working Conditions:

  • Works primarily in office with 30% of time on production floor
  • Full time, permanent position, Flexible 40-hour work week to accommodate plant activities
  • On call after office hours and weekends for emergencies
Education: 
  • Post Secondary and/or proven track records of plant management competency in food manufacturing

Related Experience:

  • 5-10 years of progressive plant management experience in food manufacturing
