Summary Description
This position is responsible for Quality Control related information for berries at the coolers at the designated locations. Requires self-reliance and the ability to work in all growing regions with little or no supervision. Responsibilities will include monitoring inventory rotation, conducting inspections of incoming and outgoing fruit. Coordinate between Growers, Sales, and Field departments regarding quality and operational issues.  
  
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Inspect and grade fruit that arrives at the Cooler in accordance with QC standard operating procedure. 
  • Input quality results into log and system and generate reports
  • Coordinate with Sales and Operations to make decisions and answer questions regarding the fruit or any segregation of the fruit
  • Make decisions for the best use of existing inventory based on the analysis of the fruit, applying knowledge of horticulture, such as fruit varieties and their impact on shelf stability, shipping challenges, etc
  • Analyze data regarding fruit inspections, such as size and maturity of fruit, percentage of defects, etc, assisting in creating the grower scorecard
  • Conducts audits of coolers to assess basic food safety, people safety, ERP protocols, and SOP’s processes specific to California Giant fruit
  • Analyze incoming fruit and volumes at the different locations to determine travel schedule throughout California, Pacific Northwest, and other locations
  • Score fruit on a quality scale and assign fruit to customer orders based on availability and quality metrics
  • Observe pack lines during harvest to mitigate quality issues that arise and provide feedback on needed adjustments to minimize rejections
  • Provide support to Operations department for regional packaging and operational support regarding supply levels and potential impact from environmental factors
  • Support Operations/Logistics with ERP systems and traceability programs
  • Uses ERP to monitor fruit deficiencies and work with Food Safety for product holds and identify product from specific lots, growers, etc to prevent downstream issues
  • Assists in training staff at 3PL
  • Other duties as assigned.
  
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agribusiness, Horticulture, Plant Sciences, or related field. 2 years or related experience can be used in lieu of education. 
  • 2 years of related experience 
  • Bilingual English and Spanish 
  • Knowledge of berry fruits, such as production, pre- and post-harvest fruit behavior, etc. 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office; intermediate level Excel
  • Analytical skill in assessing fruit volumes and quality to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Time-management and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in an effective manner
  • Ability to distinguish colors, shapes, and defects with a high attention to detail
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays
  • Passport required for international travel
  • DMV Record must pass California Giants Insurance Company requirements
  • Extended travel is required to support all operations.
 
Physical Requirements
  • This position must be able to stand for long periods of time inspecting fruit. 
  • Must be able to lift 20-25 lbs up onto pallets of fruit at shoulder level on a continual basis throughout the shift.
  • This position is subject to harvesting schedules and could work as much as 9-10 hour days. Some days could be longer
  • This position may work up to 6 days a week during the season depending on the harvesting schedule.
