Our Salinas, California office is looking for an experienced Controller who is hands on and able to perform in a company with a high volume of weekly transactions. The Controller will manage a small team and be responsible for all financial reporting, cost accounting, variance analysis, grower accounting, internal controls, process improvement and ERP system management for multiple entities.

The ideal candidate will come from an agriculture (fresh produce preferred) or manufacturing background and understand the demands of the industry. This experienced candidate will have a strong voice and a business owner mentality with the ability to effectively lead and motivate others. The ability to perform at the highest levels while diving into the smallest details in an ever-changing environment is a must.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Assess and evaluate financial performance of the organization through long-term operational goals, budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare/review/present weekly financial information to leadership team.
  • Evaluate departmental expenditures and make recommendations to improve processes and increase work efficiency.
  • Communicate, engage, and interact with the leadership team.
  • Primary organization contact for auditors and tax advisor including preparation of supporting schedules, trial balances, and financial statements.
  • Prepare annual budgets and provide financial planning and analysis.
  • Oversee the accounting team to ensure proper accounting in compliance with GAAP.
  • Review and confirm application of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
  • Prepare weekly/monthly financial and management reporting data accurately and timely.
  • Provide detailed schedules for the preparation and timely filing of all local, state and federal tax returns.
  • Manage the month end close process including prepaid expenses, accruals (rebates, freight, etc.), workpaper preparation (reconciliations), journal entry preparation and review, consolidated financial statement preparation, borrowing base preparation, fixed asset rollforward preparation, and create and present other reports as required.
  • Create and/or oversee preparation of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Enhance and implement financial and accounting systems, processes, tools and control systems.
  • Calculate, maintain and update standard cost within ERP system and present variance analysis. Standard costs are updated at a minimum annually.
  • Develop and challenge accounting staff.

Qualifications:
