Family farm on the Big Island of Hawaii is looking for a hydroponic farm grower. We grow tomatoes and peppers year around in a ¼ acre computer controlled modern greenhouse and all our produce is sold locally.
The Greenhouse Grower is responsible for all growing activities: seed starting, grafting, nutrient chemistry, rain/well water pH, humidity issues, irrigation, pollination, basic electrical, troubleshooting, pest ID and management, invasive species, molds/fungus, spraying (PPE), picking, packing, task tracking, scheduling, inventory… you name it.
Must be able to lift 50 pound bags of fertilizer and willing to learn to walk on different height drywall stilts is required so you can handle the tops of the plants up to 9.5’.
Job is 30 hours per week. Some weekend work, but job has flexible scheduling. We can train for all work required – just need a hard worker to learn. Compensation is a combination of wages plus on-site housing. Work can be done by more than one person in a household.
This is RURAL Hawaii at 1,500 feet elevation with 70-75 degrees most days, lows of 60-64. If you expect a thriving night life, Starbucks, pizza delivery, warm 85-degree breezes, or a real grocery store within 30 minutes, this is not the place for you. It rains over 100 inches a year, it’s really green, and the grass grows year round, so mowing on Christmas Eve is common.
Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) + 4 years’ work experience.
- Previous farm or garden experience preferred.
- High attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Consciousness, hard worker willing to learn all aspects of farming.
- Ability to work both in a team and self-managed.
