Job Description: 

Pacific Plug & Liner, a sister company to Smith Gardens, has an exciting opportunity for a Fulfillment and Logistics Manager to join our team at our Watsonville, CA Site.

Pacific Plug & Liner was founded in October 1999 and is located on the beautiful California Central Coast with a climate ideal for plant and flower production. We have approximately 290,000 sq. ft. dedicated to growing young plants. Pacific Plug & Liner features a state-of-the-art production facility, ensuring consistent and superior quality.

As the Fulfillment and Logistics Manager you will be responsible for managing intra-company orders and B2B shipping orders from initial production through delivery.  Fulfillment consists of order management, dumps, repositions, optimum plant quality and inventory accuracy.  Logistics consists of selection, picking, moving, packaging and management of freight delivery to both internal (Smith) and external (national broker and grower customers).  Strong focus on inter-department order management and shipping strategies to ensure fulfillment rates over 96% and lower distribution costs. Support Purchasing on all inbound logistics issues as required. You will manage the Fulfillment and Inventory Manager, Shipping Supervisor, Selecting and Moving Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Partner and coordinate with Customer Service, Sales, Production and Growing on all orders, programs and procedures to ensure high fulfillment rates.
  • Work with Head Grower to coordinate all plant material movements to meet growing requirements inside greenhouse and outside growing area, assuring accurate inventory, availability estimates and quality finishing.
  • Participate in site walks to identify potential order fulfillment problems.
  • Hire, train and develop team to ensure cross-functional capabilities in all aspects of shipping and order fulfillment.
  • Manage minimum hard good inventories and create strategies to reduce cost, using Lean and 5S approach.
  • Develop relationships with California growers to create a Logistics partnership program to maximize shipping opportunities year round.
  • Develop partnerships with key broker Logistics Managers, key carriers, and truck brokers to facilitate competitive shipping year round. Create Logistics Pricing Program that can be promoted to all growers nationwide.
  • Work with Smith Logistics to assure effective delivery of all young plants to parent company and NW cross dock activities for targeted customers.
  • Track Freight Revenue and Freight Cost monthly-work with Director of Sales to assure pricing is competitive and net cost is neutral.
  • Manage FedEx/CalGrowers/GSO programs/Freight Broker and trucking companies to negotiate most competitive rates possible.

  • Experience managing a national logistics program using multiple carriers/shipping methods.
  • Ability to develop long-term service agreements with key carriers.
  • High performance characterized by attention to detail and accurate follow-through.
  • High level of integrity, adhering to company standards and values.
  • Flexibility to work long hours as needed.
  • Required Horticulture and/or greenhouse experience.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to travel at least 3 times a year domestic or international to tradeshows and company events.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 5 years of experience in all aspects of logistics and inventory management.
  • 3 years previous supervisory experience.
  • Advanced MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Site walks indoors and outdoors, in seasonal temperatures and
  • Sitting at desk for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive motion of wrists.
