JOB FILLED - Director of Human Resources

Job Description: 

Responsible for directing all of the people functions of the corporation in accordance with the policies and practices of the SFCOS, the regulations and administrative rulings of governmental organizations and other regulatory and advisory authorities and organizations.

As a strategic partner, acts as a consultant to the executive management team on human capital related matters, which may include staffing, employee productivity, base compensation, incentive systems, workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, professional development, employee engagement and retention.

Requires a minimum of 20 percent of time spent in the production areas “on the farm” interacting, training, mentoring, across the pulse of the workforce, advocate union free pro-company work environment.

Responsible for the implementation of occupational health education and safety programs for all SFCOS and its employees. Education and Training efforts include but are not limited to providing: on-site field safety audits, and agricultural safety training for example: First Aid and CPR, Pesticide Safety Training, Heat Illness Prevention Training, Moving Equipment and Hand Safety.

Serves as the resident expert in safety and workers’ compensation by developing and implementing procedures that effectively control accidents and health exposures and minimize OSHA citations and reduce workers’ compensation costs; assumes full responsibility for accident reporting and accident investigation.

Works closely with other department personnel to ensure accidents are reported within the time limit defined by the company and by law. Identifies procedures for a compliant health and safety investigation that satisfies all state, federal and other regulatory agencies. Completes all required documentation to ensure compliance with state, federal, and other regulatory agencies.

Responsible for field human resources including but not limited to training, wage and hour, new hire processing, cash advances, payroll and all other human resources related issues.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources/Development, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other related degree preferred and a minimum of ten years applicable and proven work experience.
  • Knowledge and expertise in Human Resources and Safety Compliance laws, procedures and regulations.
  • Knowledge and expertise in Workers’ Compensation laws and practices.
  • Ability to plan, strategize, prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Proficiency in the English language, verbal and written and ability to communicate with team members and inter-company personnel in English and Spanish.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, electronic mail, FAMOUS, and other word and spreadsheet programs.

Essential Job Function:

  • Provide human resources and safety leadership to ensure all efforts are aligned with corporate human resources and safety vision and initiatives.
  • Models the highest standards for human resources and health and safety.
  • Develop and influence the organization to successfully implement programs and accomplish milestones and goals.
  • Ensure that information is communicated, understood and flows from management to employees and employees to management.
  • Conduct observations and teach to observe to improve overall performance.
  • Assist with and support emergency response efforts.
  • Notify executive management of pertinent details.

Human Resources:

  • Enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce the human resources policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operations and effectiveness of the company.
  • Work closely with management to improve employee work relationships, engagement, retention workplace culture, and performance.
  • Resolve major and highly sensitive employee relations problems, in concert with Legal, if necessary.
  • Participate in activities to guide managers in assigned business units on union-avoidance.
  • Manage the human resource information systems database and necessary reports for critical analyses of the HR function.
  • Maintain knowledge of HR policies, programs, laws and issues.
  • Provide technical support and knowledge to others within the company.
  • Oversee the completeness and accuracy of all documentation in the Red Binders (in addition to the mandatory federal and state posters, includes federal, state, county, and local licenses, various certificates of insurance, etc.) The contents vary by county and state.
  • Oversee the updating of binders with the grower information, location of pesticide records and Safety Data Sheets.
  • Oversee Wage Statement creation and distribution.
  • Supervise and/or investigate complaints, grievances, alleged harassment, theft, etc.
  • Supervise and oversee employee wage claims (reclamos).
  • Health benefits Safety / Workers Compensation:
  • Conduct observations and teach to observe to improve overall performance.
  • Assist staff to understand Cal/OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling Cal/OSHA compliance, inspections and citations.
  • Interface and negotiate with regulatory agencies on health and safety issues.
  • Assist with and support emergency response efforts.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance on how to manage ergonomic related issues and make needed changes.
  • Research and evaluate new personal protective equipment(PPE) and tools that increase worker safety and minimize accidents.
  • Investigate injuries in conjunction with line and staff personnel.
  • Notify executive management of pertinent details.
  • Evaluate hazardous conditions and practices and develop hazard control practices and programs.
  • Responsible for all required Federal and State Hazardous Materials and Environmental reporting.
  • Assists in communicating hazard control information and evaluates effectiveness of the control.
  • Guides and assists production, trucking and maintenance personnel at all locations with critical safety and health problems.
  • Oversees company accident statistics and makes recommendations for correction of problem areas.
  • Plans and directs safety and industrial hygiene services to obtain optimum service.
  • Works with trade and professional associations to promote goals and objectives in the health and safety area that affect company’s business.
  • Establishes target areas and long-range accident prevention and cost-control objectives.
  • Keeps apprised of developments in federal and state laws likely to affect the company.H-2A Responsibilities
  • Oversight responsibility for the H2A department and process.

Supervisory Responsibility: This position manages all employees of the HR, H2A,Safety and Workers Compensation departments and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within those departments.
 
Physical Requirements:

  • Continuous use of both hands; including grasping, pulling and pushing.
  • Extended sitting and driving.
  • Walking on even and uneven surfaces.
  • Reaching overhead and below the shoulder, twisting, sitting, lifting, bending, walking, stooping, climbing, sight, and hearing. Other Requirements:
  • Valid Driver License
  • Acceptable Driving Record (must meet minimum criteria to be covered on company’s auto insurance policy)
  • First Aid / CPR Train the Trainer Certification
  • Pesticide Safety Train the Trainer Certification
  • OSHA General Industry Certification Desirable

Travel Requirements: Position requires extended travel throughout various locations in Yuma, Arizona and throughout California.
