Job Description: 

The Nunes Company, Inc. has an immediate full-time position for an Industrial Field Safety Manager. This is an excellent opportunity to join a large industry leading Salinas-based, grower shipper.
 
The Industrial Field Safety Manager is responsible for implementing Occupational Health and Safety programs for all employees of the Company. Education and training efforts include, but are not limited to, providing on-site field equipment safety inspections and safety hazard assessments. Conducting training in various safety topics to keep the company in compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations requirements, and ensuring that employee safe work practices, including employee safety rules, guidelines, and policies and procedures are being followed by all Company employees and enforced by Company supervision.

Requirements: 
  • Incumbent will be required to travel to multiple locations throughout California and Nevada and will be required to relocate to the Yuma Arizona area during the growing/harvest season, December through March or as needed.
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Ensure that all policies, programs, and daily operations are in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and procedures.
  • Implement and enforce the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
  • Develop, maintain, and implement health and safety policies and procedures by managing company safety training programs.
  • Investigate accidents, near-misses, and injuries on a timely basis; and review and/or write reports and make safety improvement recommendations regarding incident/accident prevention.
  • Knowledge and experience filing Workers Compensation claims and working closely with claims adjusters and medical facilities.
  • Review and update all required OSHA and Labor Law postings in all areas that require them, including farm yards, farm shops and office areas. 
  • Conduct safety training on tractor, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work management, forklift, irrigation, and pesticide safe handling, heat illness prevention, First Aid/CPR, safe transport of field equipment, and AEDs, and various other safety topics.
  • Promote effective communication programs to enhance and encourage overall employee safety awareness and knowledge while increasing accountability for all site locations.
  • Maintain a presence at field locations to review activities and provide labor contractors with observations relating to safety.
  • Conduct periodic safety inspections and hazard assessments, and assign responsibility and deadlines to correct any safety issues identified during the inspections. 
  • Maintain OSHA documentation including MSDS/SDS binders and chemical lists.  Work with other managers responsible for hazardous material handling.
  • Evaluate hazardous conditions and practices and develop hazard control practices and programs.
  • Write policies and procedures as part of required safety programs, and be able to translate them from English to Spanish and vice versa.
  • Assist staff to understand Cal/OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling Cal/OSHA compliance, inspections and citations.
  • Provide topical subjects for Safety Meetings and randomly observe ‘Tailgate’ Safety Meetings.
  • Routinely inspect all equipment and vehicles for general safety conditions; field, office, shop.
  • Ensure lockout/tag out procedures are being followed.
  • Work closely with Workers’ Compensation carrier to schedule and arrange safety site audits.
Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or other related degree, or an equivalent amount of training and demonstrated related experience.   
  • Certified in First Aid, CPR, & AED.
  • Pesticide Safety Train the Trainer Certification.
  • OSHA General Industry Certification desirable.
  • CSP certification desirable but not required.
  • Some knowledge of Risk Management and process Safety Management programs as they relate to ammonia-based refrigeration cold warehouses.
Qualifications: 
  • Must have a good understanding of the agricultural and cold warehousing operations of a grower-shipper company.
  • Ability to identify safety and health hazards and recommend improvements to identified unsafe conditions, materials, equipment, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience working with OSHA, DOT, EPA, CARB and other environmental regulations.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Computer literate and knowledge and proficiency of MSOffice (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) programs.
  • A proven ability to work with a variety of people and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent Interpersonal and leadership skills necessary to interact effectively with individuals at all levels of the company.
  • Self-starter and works under minimum supervision.
  • Must possess a current valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.
