Job Description: 

The Controller for Urban Remedy, reporting directly to the Vice President of Operations and Finance, will be a key member of the Finance Team, and will assume an important regulatory role in the overall development and growth of the company. The Controller will be responsible for establishing and maintaining systems and controls that verify the integrity of all financial systems, processes, and financial data, and enhance the company's value.  

The ideal candidate must have strong background in both public and private accounting, have solid FP&A, Cost and Inventory Accounting, and Plant/Manufacturing Accounting experience, be knowledgeable about subscription, e-commerce, and/or CPG business models and aspire to be a thought leader. The ideal candidate is also data and technology-centric, and is comfortable working in a small company where there is pressure to move quickly and take on large projects.  The Controller should be excited about taking on a hands-on leadership role, creating reliable controls to ensure continued company-wide growth and value creation over the next few years.

Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Responsible for all aspects of the general ledger, including revenue and expense recognition, inventory, payroll, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, etc.
  • Oversee the preparation of GAAP financial statements and audit-friendly supporting schedules.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly financial reporting packages for management and investors.
  • Direct internal audit of all production activity, verify accuracy of production schedules and ensure timely schedule closing and appropriate recording of variances. ​
  • Coordinate with external auditors as required.
  • Oversee all tax reporting and filings for the company, including federal and state income tax, quarterly sales tax, and other filings as necessary.
  • and maintain day-to-day management of the company’s insurance policies.
  • Monitor new accounting and financial reporting guidance, evaluate potential impact to the company, and make recommendations as necessary.
  • Create and maintain a well-organized financial data and document warehouse.
  • Manage the Accounting team (currently one AR/AP employee) and Payroll Manager.
  • Measure and analyze operational and financial performance metrics, including location specific dashboards and scorecards. ​ Provide meaningful insights on operational performance.
  • Interpret and ensure that both Company and financial policies and procedures are understood and consistently followed by others. ​
  • Safeguard the assets of the Company by ensuring the availability of accurate and timely financial and accounting records compliant with GAAP and other relevant standards.
  • Create an energizing work environment that supports the Company's culture while ensuring an efficient and flexible organization. ​​
  • Facilitate the development of annual department expense budgets and forecasts for operations and logistics, including freight, as well as monitoring periodic performance to budget and forecast. ​
  • Manage, train, and develop department staff to enhance quality and productivity, including mentoring staff and maintaining a two-way dialogue with direct reports on work and performance.
  • Achieve results and bring out the best in people by: developing relevant job design and ensuring appropriate staffing to deliver the department's strategy operating plan and short-term objectives. ​
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. ​
Qualifications: 

Position-Specific Skills Required

  • 5 – 8 years’ in both public and private accounting; Big Four accounting firm and/or large bank experience preferred.
  • Accounting experience in a subscription, e-commerce, or CPG environment.
  • Experience in general ledger closes in a cost accounting environment, preferably in a multi-location process manufacturing environment. ​ Food manufacturing experience is a plus. Experience in inventory strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of all functions and systems for internal controls, internal and external reporting, audit, and tax
  • High level of familiarity with QuickBooks and previous ERP implementation experience
  • Experience managing payroll and knowledge of payroll legal reporting and regulations.
  • Strong Excel, written, organizational and verbal communication skills.
  • Robust problem solving and analytical skills.

Technical Skills Required

  • Strong software skills, ideally including advanced Excel (i.e. pivot tables, V-lookups, macros), PowerPoint, QuickBooks, Great Plains or similar manufacturing-based GL system, budgeting software (e.g. Hyperion), and consolidation software.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of an ERP financial system (preferably JDE), including cost accounting and manufacturing modules/​systems and standard product costing, including activity-based costing.
  • Prior experience in successful systems implementation required.

Education/Training Required

  • Bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, in accounting, finance or related field. ​
  • CPA or CMA Certification and/or MBA preferred.
  • CPA preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position works in a standard office environment with extended use of the computer/ keyboarding and sitting, as well as use of other office equipment such as phone and copier.
