JOB FILLED - Agriculture Research Assistant

Job Description: 
The position described below is for semi-skilled farm tasks that are physically demanding by nature. Work of this class involves responsibility for performing manual farm work and requires a moderately high degree of manipulative skill. Work ordinarily includes the operation of tractors and other farm equipment. It is performed under the direction of a supervisor or higher, however, constant supervision may not be required as dictated by the employee’s previous and current farm experience in this class. Work may be reviewed intermittently, while in progress, and upon completion for compliance and adherence to instructions.

Requirements: 
  • Some knowledge of practical farm operations, such as plowing, planting, irrigation, fertilizing, cultivating, and harvesting of crops.
  • Some knowledge of the use and service requirements of rototillers, plows, cultivators, planters, sprayers, and other farm equipment and implements.
  • Ability to understand and carry out routine oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to withstand prolonged exposure to variable weather conditions.
  • Skill in the use and care of equipment used in farming.
  • Ability to identify and be aware of rural threats such as rodents, spiders, snakes, animals, bugs, aggressive mammals
Responsibilities & Duties: 
  • Works as semi-skilled farm laborer on an institutional farm.
  • Performs duties such as plowing, harrowing, cultivating, fertilizing, irrigating, and harvesting farm crops on assigned plots and greenhouses.
  • Mix soil, sand, dirt and fertilizer in accordance to specifications.
  • Prepares insecticide solutions (mostly organic) and operate spray equipment on assigned plots and acreage for insect control.
  • Experience in gardening.
  • Expressed interest in agriculture.
  • Understanding how to set up and operate irrigation.
  • Understanding how to set up propagation.
  • Application of fertilizer to pots and crops in small and large quantities.
  • Precision, organization and detailed note taking is a must. Attention to detail is very important.
  • Ability to follow and read directions carefully is a critical.
  • Self-motivated, reliable and punctual.
  • Data entry experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office is preferred i.e. excel, PowerPoint, outlook, etc.
  • Education level: HS diploma preferred but not required.
  • Ability to use independent judgement.
  • Part time, 3 days per week, sometimes weekends required.
  • Ability to operate light machinery: Rototiller, weed whacker, pumps, poly tanks, chain saw, etc.
  • Landscaping experience is preferred.
  • Experience in sustainability, ecology, organic production, food sourcing and over all food production preferred.
  • Operate self-propelled machinery to plow, harrow and fertilize soil, or to plant, cultivate, spray and harvest crops.
  •  Participate in the inspection, grading, sorting, storage, and post-harvest treatment of crops.
  • Record information about crops, such as pesticide use, yields, or costs
  • Dig and plant seeds, or transplant seedlings by hand.
  • Inform farmers or farm managers of crop progress.
  • Motivated to grow and develop a career agriculture.
  • Identify plants, pests, and weeds to determine the selection and application of pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Repair and maintain, implements, and mechanical equipment.
  • Comfortable with light carpentry and repair/maintenance type work.
  • Workers prepare soil by cultivating and using a variety of instruments and machines, including: hoes, knives, buckets, rototiller, and irrigation pipes. Workers will chop weeds, irrigate crops when necessary, and determine correct size and condition of crop. Pick crop by either hand or knife.
  • Collects, grinds, sorts and/or processes soil and plant samples.
  • Reliable transportation needed and valid driver’s license necessary.
  • Completion of eighth school grade; and some experience in farming including the operation of tractors and other farm equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
