Job Description: 
We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Head Grower - IPM Specialist to join our team at our Aurora, OR site. Smith Gardens is a Wholesale Nursery company that is headquartered in Bellingham Washington, and has been family owned for over 100 years! The Aurora site opened in 1997, and is located just 30 minutes south of Portland, Oregon in the beautiful Willamette Valley.

Requirements:

  • Positive customer service attitude and work ethic.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize for results within a fast-paced working environment.
  • Effective time management.
  • Computer and Microsoft Office skills.
  • 2 years or more of supervisory experience.
  • Experience with perennials and annuals required.
  • Pesticide applicator’s license (can be obtained once hired).
  • Knowledge of biological controls and IPM programs.
Responsibilities & Duties: 
This position is responsible for producing high quality crops. The Assistant Head Grower has an active role in all trials and spends the majority of the time in the greenhouse, with a focus on growing technique and Integrated Pest Management. This position will supervise the Sprayers and plant maintenance teams.
 
  • Oversee crops and plant maintenance crews on crop detail and proper use of irrigation tools and equipment for superior quality, yield, and timing.
  • Proactively work with the Head Grower to identify areas in need of improvement and crops that could be more successful.
  • Participate in inventory and moving crop walks.
  • Develop and lead Section Grower team.
  • Maintain work schedules within budget for Section Growers and irrigators.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with growing team and department supervisors to plan projects and discuss issues.
  • Document sampling list for tissue and soil sampling.
  • Coordinate crop trials.
  • Oversee pest control using biological or conventional controls.
  • Purchase growing supplies.
  • Promote a safety culture and best practices.
  • Engage and promote a continuous improvement culture.
Education: 
  • Bachelor degree in Horticulture (preferred) or related field and 3 years of growing experience in greenhouse/nursery/field.
