ALBA seeks an Accounting & Finance Manager to lead day-to-day accounting and grant accounting, oversee all accounting and finance functions, ensure accurate reporting, and maintain compliance across federal, state, and foundation funding. This is a hands-on leadership role for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys improving systems and processes.
Since 2001, ALBA has trained and supported aspiring farmers through education, land access, and mentorship at its 100-acre organic farm incubator serving 35–40 participants annually. The Accounting & Finance Manager will provide timely, accurate financial information to the Executive Director and Board and play a key role in strengthening the organization’s financial infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting and finance functions, ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting and sound financial controls.
- Lead month-end and year-end close, including reviewing prior periods as needed to ensure accurate coding, reconciliations, and cost allocations.
- Maintain accounting records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.
- Manage grant accounting and reporting (quarterly, semi-annual, annual), including tracking restricted funds and ensuring expenses align with approved budgets and requirements.
- Maintain and improve financial tracking systems, including grant coding, fund tracking, and allocation methodologies.
- Prepare monthly financial statements, cash reporting/forecasts, and budget-to-actual variance analysis for leadership and the Board.
- Coordinate annual audit preparation and support timely completion of audit and tax filings; serve as point of contact for auditors.
- Oversee operational accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll coordination, deposits, and vendor/farmer payments.
- Support budgeting and planning, including cash flow projections and organizational sustainability planning.
- Provide cost tracking/reporting for capital or construction projects as needed.
- Supervise and support administrative staff assisting with routine accounting tasks.
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or closely related field).
- Excellent communication and relationship skills with auditors, grantors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Experience strengthening accounting processes and improving close/reporting cadence.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit and/or agriculture experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with grant accounting, compliance, and reporting (or similar).
- An understanding of cost allocation practices and/or nonprofit fund accounting.
- QuickBooks Online experience; advanced Excel skills required.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
