JOB FILLED - Category Buyer

Job Description: 


This role will require the ability to have or ability to quickly learn the Category as a whole, and the costs, margins, and players. The Category Buyer will work closely with our growers, account managers, to deliver year-round success.

The right candidate will have good people and market instinct, must be able to work independently and at a fast pace.


  • Compensation Information: Salary DOE with Base and Bonus
  • Schedule/Shift Information: Typically, Monday thru Friday, onsite role.

  • Executes the company’s produce purchasing arrangements in support of its business strategy and plan.
  • Identifies suppliers and arranges optimal contracts in terms of pricing, quality, timing, and supply availability over the term of the contract.
  • Advises senior leadership on the availability of specific products and pricing, pre-qualifying new suppliers and facilities in terms of price, capacity, and quality.
  • Ensures costs are within budget.
  • Identifies new suppliers to support future growth.
  • Attends supplier and industry conferences to identify potential suppliers, domestic and international and gain industry insights.
  • Evaluates potential suppliers in coordination with FSQ concerning the viability of their product and acceptability of their manufacturing facility.
  • Negotiates with new suppliers over cost and collaborates with logistics to bring product(s) into distribution.
  • Maintains a strong professional relationship between suppliers and the company.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness and fitness of suppliers to determine our procurement strategy.
  • Tracks commodities markets on prices and supply and determines strategy and direction for optimal procurement program.
  • Recommends best timing to introduce and promote new produce and perishable products when market is most favorable.
  • Must be able to close business.
  • Customer service driven.
  • Ability to consistently make accurate forward market calls.


  • 10+ years of previous commodity/category management and buying experience required
  • Proficient in ERP Software
  • Proficient in use MS Office tools, including excel, outlook, word, etc.
  • Highly proficient in financial planning and analysis using excel and other shared tools.
  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication
  • Overcome objections & manage expectations with buyers and growers
  • Budgeting, planning, and goal setting
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills


  • Knowledge of produce supply-chain operations, farming, packing, cooling, sales, etc.
  • Bilingual is awesome!
  • Produce Pro Experience


  • Be able to sit and work at a computer for 8 hours a day with the ability to complete data entry
  • Ability to make and receive phone calls.
