Job description

This is a chance to turn numbers into meaningful progress. At the Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association (ALBA), you’ll partner with a mission-driven team to ensure strong financial stewardship that supports new farmers and strengthens local food systems.

ALBA seeks an Accounting & Finance Manager to lead day-to-day accounting and grant accounting, oversee all accounting and finance functions, ensure accurate reporting, and maintain compliance across federal, state, and foundation funding. This is a hands-on leadership role for a detail-oriented accounting professional who enjoys improving systems and processes.

Since 2001, ALBA has trained and supported aspiring farmers through education, land access, and mentorship at its 100-acre organic farm incubator serving 35–40 participants annually. The Accounting & Finance Manager will provide timely, accurate financial information to the Executive Director and Board and play a key role in strengthening the organization’s financial infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting and finance functions, ensuring timely, accurate financial reporting and sound financial controls.

  • Lead month-end and year-end close, including reviewing prior periods as needed to ensure accurate coding, reconciliations, and cost allocations.

  • Maintain accounting records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards.

  • Manage grant accounting and reporting (quarterly, semi-annual, annual), including tracking restricted funds and ensuring expenses align with approved budgets and requirements.

  • Maintain and improve financial tracking systems, including grant coding, fund tracking, and allocation methodologies.

  • Prepare monthly financial statements, cash reporting/forecasts, and budget-to-actual variance analysis for leadership and the Board.

  • Coordinate annual audit preparation and support timely completion of audit and tax filings; serve as point of contact for auditors.

  • Oversee operational accounting functions including AP, AR, payroll coordination, deposits, and vendor/farmer payments.

  • Support budgeting and planning, including cash flow projections and organizational sustainability planning.

  • Provide cost tracking/reporting for capital or construction projects as needed.

  • Supervise and support administrative staff assisting with routine accounting tasks.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or closely related field).

  • Excellent communication and relationship skills with auditors, grantors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.

  • Experience strengthening accounting processes and improving close/reporting cadence.

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience; nonprofit and/or agriculture experience strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with grant accounting, compliance, and reporting (or similar).

  • An understanding of cost allocation practices and/or nonprofit fund accounting.

  • QuickBooks Online experience; advanced Excel skills required.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

This search is being managed exclusively by Joe Produce Search. If you’re an accounting leader passionate about driving financial integrity while making a real impact in the nonprofit and agriculture sectors, we want to hear from you.
