JOB FILLED - Operations Manager – Stone Fruit Farm and Packing House

Job Description: 

JM Traver Packing and JM Traver Farms (sister companies of HMC Farms and Jensen Packing) are part of a large vertically integrated family-owned grower, packer, and shipper of California stone fruits and table grapes with deep roots in the Central Valley.  

JM Traver Packing and Farms is looking for an Operations Manager to manage the farming activities on 1000+ acres of peaches and nectarines as well as the day to day operations of the packing house. 

The Operations Manager will evaluate, plan, organize and manage all farming and harvesting operations. The Operations Manager will report directly to the owners of the company.  The farm managers, packing house manager and supervisors will report directly to the Operations Manager.  

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with HMC sales for daily picking and packing estimates

  • Ensure the proper quality of fruit is both picked and packed

  • Oversee farm managers to make sure harvest, pruning, spraying, thinning, irrigating and other farm activities are done in a timely manner and efficiently

  • Responsible for all aspects of Food Safety while working with the Food Safety Manager on food safety plan and audits

  • Purchase of supplies, boxes and all major purchases of equipment

  • Oversee office administrative staff

  • Work with Office Manager/HR on employee hiring, firing and discipline

  • Work with outside agencies including, Air District, Water Coalition, and Farm Labor Contractors, etc.

  • Oversee general safety and trainings with help of office staff and managers

  • Recommend improvements and future planning for both the packing shed and farming operation, including opinions/ideas on fruit selection for future plantings

  • Work with and communicate with all HMC entities to be consistent with policies and procedures

  • Monitor worker’s compensation oversight and reduce/eliminate worker injuries

  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and laws

 Requirements:

  • Ability to work extended hours including evenings, weekends or as business needs arise, especially during harvest season (May-October)

  • Ability to work well with others

  • Professional, dependable, principled, and honest

  • Knowledge of agricultural production (peaches, plums and nectarines preferred) 

  • Ability to manage 75-100 employees plus contract labor employees

  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to lead and influence others

  • Strong computer skills

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required 

  • Possess a valid CA driver’s license in good standing

  • Famous software knowledge a plus

  • Awareness and knowledge of new technologies in agriculture

 Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time

  • Must be able to climb and descend stairs

  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to work in extreme temperatures (< 30 degrees to >110 degrees F)

  • Must be able to stand, sit, kneel or squat for long periods of time
