We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Produce Buyer to join our dynamic procurement team in Los Angeles. The ideal candidate will be experienced in sourcing fresh produce, with a strong focus on balancing quality with cost efficiency.
This role requires a proactive, adaptable individual who thrives in a fast-paced environment and consistently makes decisions that support the company’s quality standards, pricing goals, and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Source, evaluate, and purchase fresh produce from local and international suppliers with a focus on quality, seasonality, and competitive pricing.
- Maintain strong vendor relationships and consistently negotiate favorable terms, pricing, and logistics.
- Analyze market trends and seasonal availability to make informed purchasing decisions and optimize margins.
- Monitor inventory levels and ensure product rotation aligns with company standards to minimize shrink and spoilage.
- Conduct quality inspections upon product arrival and maintain quality assurance standards across all procurement activities.
- Collaborate with sales, warehouse, and logistics teams to ensure seamless order fulfillment and communication.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising product quality or supplier reliability.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, food safety regulations, and procurement best practices.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in produce buying or a related role in the foodservice or wholesale produce industry.
- Strong knowledge of produce varieties, seasonal trends, and quality indicators.
- Excellent negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to balance product quality with cost-efficiency and gross margin targets.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills; ability to use data to support buying decisions.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, inventory systems, and purchasing software (e.g., Famous, Produce Pro, etc. a plus).
- Must be self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work both independently and as part of a team in a high-pressure environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Experience working with foodservice, wholesale, or retail grocery procurement
- Familiarity with USDA grading and inspection standards
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive salary: $80,000 to $120,000 DOE
