Under general direction of the Human Resources Department, develops and implements safety and environmental programs to minimize the risk of illness and injury in compliance with applicable regulations. Ensures that employees receive mandated safety and environmental training, maintains safety and environmental records and prepares reports for filing with regulatory agencies and insurance companies. This position also advises management of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to safety compliance.

Requirements: 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a responsible Safety position, preferably in Agricultural, Manufacturing or Food/Beverage setting.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish or Punjabi required.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • As part of an effective worker safety program the person in this role develops, implements, updates policies and procedures as mandated by local, state and Federal rules and regulations and conducts audits to ensure compliance/consistant application.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal, State and local government requirements concerning employee safety in accordance with OSHA and the Occupational Injury Benefit Plan.
  • Prepares, sources and/or delivers employee training related to safety, industrial hygiene and environmental hazards.
  • Schedules training for all employees and follows up to ensure that training requirements are completed timely.
  • Prepares and maintains documents and records including chemical inventories, facility maps, lockout tag out instructions, personal protective equipment lists, etc.
  • Maintains libraries of safety documents such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in hard copy and online. Oversees GHS program.
  • Investigates accidents and injuries to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions to reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Works with HR and Department Managers to develop, implement and oversee “Temporary Transitional Duty” program. Ensures employees are in jobs that meet their assigned restrictions and assists with job modification to aid recovery and transition to regular duty.
  • Lead project teams on Safety improvement initiatives (e.g. BBS, ergonomics, etc.).
  • Ensures that lockout tag out procedures, hazardous energy control program, work instructions, machine guarding and personal protective equipment is in place and that employees are trained in safety requirements.
  • Gathers and analyzes data and prepares reports for company management, local, state and federal agencies, property-casualty insurance companies, etc. as required.
  • Performs safety inspections of facilities in Morgan Hill and Arroyo Grande.
  • Tracks and reports on the status of risk mitigation projects.
  • Prepares an annual calendar listing due dates for reports, testing and other required activities.
  • Acts as safety consultant for new equipment installations.
  • Administer Red Wing Shoe program.
  • Manage hearing testing.
  • Manage quarterly Safety Awards.
Education: 
  • Associate’s Degree in related field required, plus Safety Specialist experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental/OSHA safety or a related field preferred.
  • OSHA 30 Hour Certification.
Skills: 
  • Strong safety and Cal OSHA background with a thorough knowledge and understanding of Federal, state and local safety laws and regulations is essential.
  • Experience with implementing BBS (Behavioral Based Safety) initiatives a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Advanced skill in written communication, especially technical writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a management team to implement safety programs, and create a culture that values safety.
  • Demonstrated ability in utilization of MS Office software including MS Word and Excel and Powerpoint.
  • Demonstrated ability in utilization Alchemy as a Trainer (a plus).
  • Forklift Trainer.
  • CPR First Aid Trainer or EMT desired.
