Seeking a highly qualified and experienced Entomologist in Arvin, CA to lead our entomology efforts for a large, diversified, multi-state vegetable farming operation. The Entomologist will develop a strategic plan for comprehensive insect pest management in organic and conventional farming systems for all crops in all regions. This role will be a key contributor to the Agronomy Team and will work cooperatively with other department leaders and staff to execute the plan.
JOB MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- BA Degree in Entomology or related field is required.
- Must have deep knowledge of common insect pests of leafy vegetables, and expertise with insects common to root crops, potatoes, and fruiting vegetables.
- Firm understanding of insect control methods including the use of synthetic and biological crop protection products, avoidance and deterrence techniques, and the role of beneficial insects is required.
- Preference will be given to candidates with on-farm experience and those involved in the development of pest control solutions in private industry.
- Data driven with experience conducting field trials, data collection and analysis, interpreting data and making recommendations.
- Results driven with a business mindset, with ability to acquire needed information from a variety of sources to make informed decisions.
- Competency with data analysis software, Microsoft Office Suite, email, spreadsheets, and ability to learn other internal software.
- Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team.
- Ability to form productive working relationships with members of the farming team, upper management, and crop protection company representatives.
- Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the corporate mission.
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time with periodic need to stay overnight.
- Must have a valid driver's license with clean DMV driving record.
- Must pass a pre placement drug/alcohol screen.
JOB PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:
- Advanced degree in Entomology or related area required (Ph.D. preferred).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develop strategic plan for comprehensive insect pest management in organic and conventional farming systems for all crops grown by the company in all regions.
- Plan will include approaches for controlling or suppressing insect populations in commercial fields to acceptable levels to avoid loss of crop quality and yield.
- The Entomologist will be responsible for establishing insect treatment thresholds, evaluating scouting methods, and will play a critical role in directing Pest Control Advisors and Crop Scouts on proper methods of in-field pest evaluations.
- Evaluate the existing insect pest control program and suggest improvement strategies that result in better crop quality and minimize rejections.
- Elevate the company’s knowledge of insect pests and their control by teaching and conducting educational presentations to relevant staff. Work with the Spray Group and Pest Control Advisors to ensure proper application of crop protection products in the field.
- The Entomologist will spend considerable time in the field scouting, coaching others, and evaluating problems as they arise.
- Coordinate all entomology-related field trials and coordinate with outside companies and universities to conduct external trials.
- Communicate trial results and resulting recommendations to other business units and prepare technical reports and presentations as needed.
- Responsible for vetting all new products and meeting with sales representatives to understand the merits of their product offerings.
- Act as liaison between our company and universities, private industry cooperators, government and regulatory agencies.
- Determine regulatory requirements, legal constraints, and organic standards associated with the use of relevant crop protection products and insect control methods.
- The Entomologist may also be asked to perform other duties that are not specifically mentioned in this list of essential job functions.
Salary: $90,000-$115,000/YEARLY
