Job Location: Durham, North Carolina & Remote (First 90 days in-person, afterwards hybrid) 

Schedule: Full time, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm EST

Job Description:

Happy Dirt was founded in 2004 when local and organic produce was not easy to find in the Southeast. We operated as Eastern Carolina Organics for 15 years, focusing solely on Carolina organic farmers. In 2019 we re-branded to Happy Dirt to scale up our ability to serve customers and farmers by building the organic produce supply chain beyond our state borders. As we maintain and continue to build upon our foundation of mutually beneficial relationships with the many farmers and vendors that we now partner with throughout the United States, our diverse customer base of wholesale buyers continues to expand as well. Our unique and authentic way of partnering with farmers as well as our diverse customer base is a major industry differentiator.

We are seeking a Full-Time Controller to join our Finance Team. Qualified applicants must be very strong communicators, have a proven track record of stellar attention to detail and follow through, and be able to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment. Ideal candidates will thrive with a blend of team-driven work as well as mastering independent projects.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Manage Happy Dirt accounting function including all personnel, contractors and third-party service providers
  • Be the main owner of the ERP system for the accounting function and responsible for its accuracy. Generate reports as needed.
  • Responsible for monthly close process, financial statement preparation and accuracy of all data from accounting system 
  • Responsible for day-to-day cash management of Happy Dirt, including preparing weekly cash flow forecasts and status updates
  • Providing year end information to CPA for tax returns, and ensuring they have everything they need to meet tax deadlines
  • Be main point of contact with CPA firm 
  • Ensure all tax filings are done on time, including sales tax, property tax and other, with support of CPA firm. Making quarterly sales tax payments
  • Responsible for successful completion of our annual audit (beginning 2027)
  • Maintain business insurance policies and relationships
  • Responsible for the documentation and updating of SOPs and Procedures where needed
  • Identify new technology tools that can improve Happy Dirt’s efficiency and implement, with team and outside vendor support as needed
  • Represent Happy Dirt in an ethical and professional manner in all interactions with customers, farmers, vendors, and coworkers.
  • Other responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in accounting roles with increasing responsibilities, including being responsible for the monthly close process
  • Experience with inventory accounting  
  • Experience with payroll accounting 
  • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required
  • Strong familiarity with internal controls best practices
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Experience with ERPs 
  • Experience collaborating with team remotely 
  • Excellent communication skills, problem solver, detail-oriented and a self-starter 
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management skills.
  • Ability to meet and manage deadlines.
  •  Strong project management skills, ensuring successful coordination with outside vendors.
  • Ability to communicate well with others in both verbal and written forms.

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics or Business Central 
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI 
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience with tools such as Bill.com, Ramp, Expensify, etc.
